Keyboard Power: Using Your Computer Even If Your Mouse “Dies”
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under IT News
There are various accessories that could help operating a computer easier. The mouse is just an example of an accessory which makes navigation simple with just one click. However, most of these accessories have short “lifespan” and can be considered disposable. This is when the accessories can become bothersome.
What are you to do, when in the middle of an important document, your mouse decides to “die”? Would you worry? Would you panic and run to the nearest store? What if it’s night time and the stores are closed and you are rushing up your work?
On your keyboard, immediately press CTRL + S simultaneously to save whatever it is you’re doing. That way, you don’t lose your work. This is a common and one of the most familiar tasks without using the mouse. If the mouse is not functioning and you need to do something important but you don’t have the time to repair the mouse or change it, you can actually still do your work even with just the keyboard around. Here are some key combinations you need to navigate your way through your PC sans the mouse:
Ctrl + O – to open a file or document
Ctrl + B – to use the “Bold” feature of fonts
Ctrl + I – to italize fonts
Ctrl + U – to underline texts in a document
Ctrl + X – to cut texts, cells, or icons from files
Ctrl + W – to close existing windows
Ctrl + R – to align document to the right
Ctrl + L – to align document to the left
Ctrl + E – to align document to the center (especially in Word Documents)
Ctrl + Z – to undo last action done in a document
Ctrl + Y – to redo last action done in a document
Shift F7 – to prompt the Thesaurus tool in a document
F7 – to prompt the spelling and grammar check tool in a document
F12 – or save as, to save same document with another filename or to another drive
Windows + D - shows desktop
Alt + Tab – switches you from one window to another
F5 – refreshes your browser when it seems to have stopped moving (when you are using the Internet)
Ctrl + Esc – prompts the “Start Menu” when you are using the old 101-key keyboard without the Windows keys on it.
F6 – enables you to change the URL on the address field when you are using the Internet.
Shift + Tab – when you need to go back to a previous cell (in a spreadsheet) or entry in a form (in the Internet)
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert – to paste copied text to another document
Windows + F – when you need to find and open a file recently saved
Windows + Pause/Break – to directly open and view your system properties without going through the control panel windows
Windows + E – to directly open and view Windows Explorer without going though the Start Menu
Alt + F4 – to prompt shut down menu
When you get used to using these shortcuts, you will certainly be able to finish the task you are doing even without the mouse. And this ability will make you look like a computer whiz.

My Troubles With Wordpress Themes
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under IT News
It all began in the late 90’s. I wanted to put some news on my website. A diary. A list of forthcoming events. I started with simple HTML. One page, with sections for every post. Simple.
Then I heard about ‘blogs’ and ‘blogging’. Being smart, I picked Wordpress, the most popular software. How clever, I thought. If you get the WYSIWYG editor going, anyone can put up a web site. Very democratic.
This encouraged my to post my outermost thoughts; on politics, London, and personal gripes. As a webmaster, I watched to see Google index them. “Here we go”, I thought, “soon, my jewels of extrospection will belong to the ages”.
Except Google didn’t like my blog. It wouldn’t index much beyond the front page. Why, why, why?
Duplicate content? I set it to put only one post per page.
No improvement.
I looked at what Google was indexing. Then I looked at the blog HTML. Soon, all became clear.
In sum:
- Wordpress was still duplicating my content, and
- It had no proper META tags, and
- There was a lot irrelevant HTML, and
- The layout obscured the content.
I had a quick search on Google to find search engine optimisation tips. There is a plugin ‘head META description’ ( http://guff.szub.net/plugins/ ). But I didn’t use that, oh no.
For some reason, I got the notion that a complete theme would be the ticket. I tried modifying an existing one myself. Better, but not perfect. Google was starting to index more pages, but they all had the same title. My missives to an uncaring world were being ignored.
So I got someone else to do one, based on my criteria, which were:
- Grab a META ‘title’ from the blog post ‘title’;
- Grab a META ‘description’ from the blog ‘excerpts’;
- Put a ROBOTS ‘noindex’ tag in non-content pages.
But that wasn’t enough. For best SEO results you need to configure Wordpress brutally. You have to be _mean_ to it. You have to _man_ enough.
I did a bit of research and came up with to following tips.
WARNING: They are extreme. If you already have good rankings, making radical changes to your URLs may affect them. In my case:
- Moving my blog http://www.ttblog.co.uk to the root web directory,
- MOD_REWRITING its URLs, and
- Removing a 301 redirect,
… caused my PageRank to go to 0. BUT, page indexing was unaffected.
This was temporary, as Google saw it as ’suspect’ behaviour. I had radically changed my site.
Here are the tips, for real _men_, who can look in the face of internet death and laugh:
1. Activate permalinks by going to ‘Options/Permalinks’. You may have to enable Apache MOD_REWRITE on your web account.
1a. Shorten the permalinks code to just the %postname% variable. Don’t bother with the date codes. This keeps your URLs short.
2. Point your blog in the uppermost directory possible. http://www.ttblog.co.uk is better than http://www.ttblog.co.uk/wordpress/
So a typical post would look like
http://www.ttblog.co.uk/Im-hard-as-nails-me/
rather than
http://www.ttblog.co.uk/wordpress/2006/08/03/Im-hard-as-nails-me/
3. Then install an SEO’d theme.
My blog posts are now being indexed beautifully. The Google ’site:’ command returns all my posts, and little else.
For my next challenge, I take on Windows XP, and turn it into an operating system.

Microsoft Patch Management For Home Users
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under Uncategorized
With easy access to Broadband and DSL the number of people using the Internet has skyrocket in recent years. Email, instant messaging and file sharing with other Internet users has also provided a platform for faster spreading of viruses, Trojans and Spyware. Being on the Internet without proper protection is like walking in the rain with no umbrella - you’re gonna get wet no matter how fast you run.
With so many computers installed in home offices it becomes critical that home users install the latest Microsoft patches when they become available. Older operating systems like Windows 98, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000, or Windows XP prior to Service Pack require the user to initiate the process of checking for security patches. Windows XP Service Pack 2 has changed this and the default settings are now notifying the user of available updates automatically. This has increased the level of security in some areas, but there is a very large number of users and computers that do not install security patches or hot fixes provided by Microsoft.
How should home users actually handle the task of patching their computers? Like businesses home users should do some research about the patches that are being installed. Just installing them and walking away will work for a while, but sooner or later home users will run into an issue that a patch breaks something and eventually renders the system useless. So, what should home users do when new Microsoft patches become available? First of all - patches are usually released the second Tuesday of every month. Often these events are commented in the news and other media. Users should also signup for email alerts or MSN Messenger alerts at Microsoft’s security website at http://www.microsoft.com/security to be aware about updates.
Once patches are available Microsoft recommends to install them immediately. Depending on the confidence level of the user this should be done fairly soon after the patch release. If a users has several systems available it is recommended to test the patches on the least critical system first before updating all machines. Only one machine at a time is recommended to keep track of things and to be able to fix problems. In Windows XP it is also recommended to create a restore point first so that the system can revert back to the existing state before patching. Home users should closely follow the media about virus outbreaks and updates. Waiting a few days with patching a machine can make sense if some critical work is done on the computer an important deadline needs to be kept. Nothing is more annoying than having to fight computer problems with limited time at hand. Speaking of time - never install patches without having enough time at hand. Users should allocate 60 minutes of time just in case. If something goes wrong time pressure is the last thing you want to face when troubleshooting a machine that is down.

Rootkits – Hidden Hazards On Your System
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under IT News
If you’re concerned about security on your computer network, there’s a new word to add to your vocabulary – rootkit. A rootkit is a set of utilities installed on your computer whose purpose is to hide what other programs are doing. They’ve been around for a few years, but they didn’t really hit the security spotlight until November 2005. That was when researchers discovered that some CDs from Sony were installing a rootkit on user computers as part of their DRM (Digital Rights Management) software. The purpose of the rootkit was to prevent the DRM software from being detected and uninstalled – but there was an unintended side effect. The rootkit opened a security hole on those computers that couldn’t be detected by standard security software, and left them vulnerable to attacks by malicious software and hackers.
That’s bad news for users and IT professionals who depend on virus and spyware detection programs to alert them to an invader on their networks. Generally, when you’re computer is infected by spyware or malware , it can be detected by monitoring your computer activity. You can check the running processes and find programs that shouldn’t be loaded. You can run a virus or spyware scanner to find registry keys and files that fit certain patterns. You can monitor activity coming in over a network.
A rootkit makes all of those defenses worthless by hiding the keys, files, processes and communications from your computer operating system. What your computer can’t see, it can’t report and you can’t fix. The methods used to hide the files and processes vary and are getting more and more sophisticated. Most do it by ‘hooking’ into a process that Windows expects to find running, either by replacing the process files, or by adding itself into them.
With the rootkit in place, the hacker has a virtual backdoor into your system. He can read your keystrokes, record passwords, gather information from your network and change your data and files. A hacker with access to your system through a rootkit can reinstall hacking programs, access your accounts and your users’ accounts and wreak general havoc. It’s the ultimate Trojan backdoor.
Once a rootkit is installed, it’s virtually impossible to detect and remove. When a virus detection or spyware program runs, they don’t see the rootkit processes – they see the process that’s cloaking it. Some may alter their own files with the details and stats associated with the files that they’re replacing so that operating systems don’t notice a difference. A sysadmin who is an expert in network security may be able to detect it by running system checks from an uninfected machine, but most agree that once a rootkit has been installed, the only way to be sure you’ve removed it is to wipe the drive clean and install the operating system.
Because rootkits don’t install themselves, you can block them by blocking attempts to penetrate your network. One way to effectuate this is to install a spyware or malware protection program to help prevent rootkits from being installed at the server level or on individual desktops. The key is to practice excellent network security at all times so that you block the programs that install rootkits.

Windows Registry Cleaner Checklist
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under Uncategorized
Over 92% of computers are infected with Adware and spyware. Such software is rarely accompanied by uninstall utility and even when it is it almost always leaves broken Windows Registry keys behind it. Even if you have an anti-spyware tool your Windows Registry might be broken - developers of those tools are focused on removing Adware and spyware functionality, not every trace of software itself.
Another category of software that is known to leave bits and pieces behind on uninstallation is games. There are a lot of special installation systems that creates strange files, unique entries in your registry file as well as changes system dll’s to other versions. Once you uninstall the game a lot of the special installation changes it made will be left behind, causing you problems.
You should run an advanced registry cleaner for Windows that allows you to safely scan, clean, and repair registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks on a regular basis.
Problems with the Windows Registry are a common cause of Windows crashes (blue screens) and error messages (memory as well as disk errors). By using a PC tune-up utility, your system will be more stable, your software will run quicker, and your operating system will boot faster.
Registry problems can occur for many reasons, including references left behind after uninstallation; incorrect removal of software; missing or corrupt hardware drivers; or orphaned start-up programs. With a few easy steps, a good registry cleaner will scan your entire registry for any invalid entries and provide a list of the errors found.
You then can choose to clean each item or automatically repair them all after making a backup without the need for a registry editor such as Regedit.
To help people choose a product have we created this short checklist.
A good windows registry clean and repair product should have the following options.
Automatic Scan
To facilitate your windows registry scan. This is the simplest way to clean up the registry. Automatic Scan is recommended for ‘non-technical’ users.
Custom Scans
You customize your search and scan Windows registry for particular types of errors (shared DLLs, missing fonts, invalid start-up entries, etc.).
Manual Cleanup
After the scan is complete, the program should show you a full list of errors with details, broken down by types and let you fix individual invalid entries or all invalid entries of a certain type.
Backup and Undo
Before removing an entry from your registry, should an automatic creation of a backup file be done, that can be used to undo the changes. This to avoid changes without backup.
Scheduler
To schedule the program to scan the registry whenever you start your computer.
Using software like this is not a one time fix. You must run it on a regular basis to keep your registry clean and without errors. This will help the stability and speed of windows.
We have tested a number of registry fix and clean utilities and present our top 3 list on our site for your convenience.

The Urge To Download
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under IT News
If you’ve been hearing the buzz on Urge recently, it’s not about a deep desire or compulsion - it’s about MTV’s offering to the world of online music downloads and streaming.
Urge is a subscription based music download service in which its patrons can subscribe for a monthly fee of $10 and listen to as many of the 2 million songs in MTV’s coffers as they like. If they’d like to download that song, then it costs 99 cents each.
But it’s not just MTV behind the latest addition to the world of online music. Microsoft and MTV are working together on this one. Bill Gates must have seen the success of similar sites like Napster and Rhapsody and decided to jump on the bandwagon. Urge’s challenge will be to convince all those music lovers who prefer to buy songs and download them through sites like the incredibly popular iTunes, owned by Apple computers, that subscribing to a site and being able to listen to whatever songs you like, in whatever order and as often as you like is just as good or better than buying them one by one. It’s just one more battle to add to the long running conflict between Microsoft and Apple.
Does Bill have anything different to offer through Urge? Anything that makes this latest venture stand out from similar sites? Not really. Should you choose to become an Urge subscriber, you won’t find any music that you wouldn’t find on any other download - subscription site. The prices are even pretty much the same.
What they do offer is a aesthetics - their site looks good. Plus, there’s the camaraderie. Subscribers can post on blogs and converse with one another. But that’s about it.
But with Microsoft powering the marketing and advertising engine behind Urge, it’s sure to do well. Even the latest incarnation of Microsoft’s Windows Media Player has Urge built in. Everyone with a PC has access to this free player and therefore easy access to Urge.
What PC users won’t have is the portability provided by the wildly popular iPod. Current owners of iPods, should they decide to subscribe to Urge, will have to buy songs through the site, download them, burn them onto CDs and then convert the music files to mp3s in order to be compatible. Other portable devices are compatible with the service, however, and those are listed on the site.
This all may change in the Christmas of 2006, as buzz indicates Microsoft plans to release their “iPod Killer”. Based on the Xbox brand, and including additional features like gaming, this media player is aimed right at Apple’s heart, and could quickly make “Urge” a household name, assuming the two products are closely linked.
Each of the music download sites has their own strengths and weaknesses. Urge fully divides and subdivides genres so that its subscribers can easily find what they’re looking for while exploring other bands that they might like. Yahoo Music Unlimited personalizes the start page to include suggestions based on the subscribers previous downloads and offers a cheaper subscription rate. Rhapsody has the best radio services, providing specialized stations that stream a pre-set list of music.
If you can’t decide, then try one or try them all. Each of them offers a free trial subscription. You can experiment with all of them and decide which one suits you best.

The Cost To Rent A Laptop Computer
by Dexter on Jul.24, 2009, under IT News
Laptop computer rental prices vary by length of time, location, specification and product availability. Monthly computer rentals cost less per day than daily rentals. Typically desktop computers rent for less money than notebook or laptop computers.
Period of Time – Daily, Weekly and Monthly Rates
“Monthly rentals typically are around $225, but still dependent upon specification, availability and delivery location.”
In most places, computer rental rates are based on daily, weekly and or a monthly rates. Tech Travel Agents, who book computer rental reservations worldwide, report that Pentium 4 desktop computer rentals start at approximately $149 per week in most markets in the United States and Canada. Based upon computer specification, availability and location required, prices can be 20% to 35% lower or higher.
Delivery Location: Office Building or Convention Center
Business address deliveries are generally less expensive than delivering to a convention center. Often business addresses have close-in parking and easy access to the delivery / install area. A convention center complex requires a concerted effort from both the rental company and the company receiving the equipment at the convention center. Often convention center deliveries are more time consuming and costly to deliver, install and pickup afterwards.
Computer Rental Unit Specification
Normally a laptop computer rental consists of an Intel Pentium 4, Computer running Windows XP. Standard RAM is 256 to 512mb, 30gb or larger hard drives. Higher computer specifications cost more to rent. For example: if you require advanced graphic cards, more ram, a different operating system or software installed, computer rental rates will increase.
Be sure to include your computer specification, delivery location and date/time:
Intel Centrino Wi-Fi Wireless Laptop with Microsoft Windows
Intel Pentium 4 High Value Desktop Computer Rental
Technology Rental Equipment is a Commodity subject to Market Forces
Supply and demand issues come into play in the computer rental business too. Supply can be affected by the number of competitors and total computer rental units (known as a rental pool) in a given market area. Having a Tech Travel Agent book your technology rental needs means you will always get the equipment you need. You are not dependent on one single equipment vendor. Tech Travel Agents obtain equipment via large technology pools from multiple sources across the US, Canada and Europe.
Upgrade to Large Plasma Display Rentals
This century, the rental industry is more complex and dynamic than last. New product innovations such as 82” plasma flat screen displays, and dual core processors, are available for rent. More complex products mean better corporate events. If you are still using an old notebook to run your PowerPoint presentation, consider stepping up to the most modern technology with products from computer rental firms.
Rent for Projects and Save
Renting is perfect for companies hiring temporary employees, attending conferences, tradeshows, providing computer training and engaged in accounting/finance projects. These companies realize lower costs, less use of capital, and no maintenance and write-off expenses.
Relax, let your Tech Travel Agent handle it!
Enjoy your trade show, conference or training program.

Taking Ctrl - 20 Keyboard Shortcuts
by Dexter on Jul.23, 2009, under Uncategorized
There may be times when it is simply inconvenient to use the click of your mouse for a specific command or even for an entire working session on your computer. Believe it or not, repeated clicking of the mouse can cause physical pain and nerve damage in hands, wrists, arms, shoulders or even the neck of some people. Minimize this risk by taking note of your computer habits and replacing some of the most frequently used mouse movements with simple, easy to learn, keyboard shortcuts. You can save time and hand movements by implementing these helpful “tricks”. No special keyboard is needed for the shortcuts described below.
Because each program has its own unique shortcuts it would be impossible and a bit overwhelming to try to list them all here. I will attempt to demonstrate the most common shortcuts generally used in most Windows applications.
FUNCTION KEYS — Hitting the F1 key in any program will bring up the Help menu for that particular program. F7 will activate a spelling and grammar check. F10 activates the menu bar so that you can then type the corresponding underlined letter to drop down that menu list. You can then use the up/down arrow keys to select the appropriate command and press Enter to activate it. Or, while holding down the Alt key, press the spacebar to activate the control menu to minimize, maximize or close out your active window. Again, type in the corresponding underlined letter to carry out the desired command. All this can be done without taking your hands off the keyboard and reaching for that mouse.
HOME/END KEYS — You can also navigate within any document or file by the use of your arrow keys and the “Home” and “End” keys. Pressing the Home key will bring you to the beginning of the line on which your cursor sits, while pressing the Home key while holding down Ctrl will bring your cursor back to the beginning of the entire document. Similarly, pressing the End key will take your cursor to the end of that line, while pressing Ctrl plus the End key will take you to the end of your entire document. Pressing your up and down arrow keys will take you either up or down one line, while pressing the left and right arrow keys will move your cursor one character to the right or left.
CTRL KEY — Now that you have found a way to navigate around your screen without using the mouse, here are a few more helpful shortcuts to try. The following are 2-key combination commands. While holding the Ctrl key down, press the following keys to carry out the commands. (Note - do not press the “+” key – that is only instructing you to press the second key while still holding down the Ctrl key.)
Ctrl + C… to copy file, folder or selected text
Ctrl + X… will cut selected data (remove and place in memory)
Ctrl + V… will paste that file, folder or text
Ctrl + U… to activate the underline command (or turn it off)
Ctrl + B…to activate the bold command (or turn it off)
Ctrl + I…to activate the italic command (or turn it off)
Ctrl + A…will select all
Ctrl + P…to print document
Ctrl + S…to save document
Ctrl + O…to open a document
Ctrl + L…left justifies selected text
Ctrl + R…right justifies selected text
Ctrl + E…centers selected text

Those who work with video can do editing and production, multimedia, audio editing and production, and visual effects. And, of course, professionals can edit and fuse images, as well as design for print.
Professionals also appreciate Adobe graphic design website software because it works on a variety of platforms, including Windows Vista and both Tiger and Leopard on Macs. And, for those who already own Adobe products, it’s easy to upgrade to CS3 - even from standalone graphics software programs. Finally, those who purchase one CS3 edition and then decide that they would like an enhanced version (moving from, for example, CS3 Design Standard to Design Premium) can easily make the switch.
There’s no question that the creativity of designers has spurred Adobe to step up and develop a toolkit that enables professionals to reach new heights.
