The Web turns 20 today. totally amazing if you ask me. My 10 year old wonders out loud what we all did before the Internet by which he means the browser based world of Club Penguin, Google, msn, and You Tube. And for the life of me, I can not remember, either.

We used to sneak into the Physics office in college to get extra blanks in case we messed up when creating copies for a presentation. And you had to get there early on seminar day to command a slot in the mimeograph line. (It was a blessed breakthrough when the photo copier machine was installed and only about five pence a copy!

And for creating, editing, co authoring? It was typewriters, paper, and biro pens, folks. And pen and ink for graphics.

As long as hard disk errors like lost clusters and bad sectors really are being caused by problems with the file system, CHKDSK works fine. The catch is that such errors are identical symptoms of other, more serious problems with the computer, such as a physically damaged hard drive. In such cases, Windows misdiagnoses the cause of the problem and runs CHKDSK anyway. Not only are these problems that CHKDSK does not and cannot fix, but it can also make the problem worse while trying to apply the wrong solution. Imagine a plumber trying to fix a leak that is actually being caused, not by the pipes, but by a hole in the roof.

In the process of CHKDSK attempting unsuccessfully to correctly rewrite a non-existent file system problem on a physically damaged sector of the hard disk, the data contained in that sector may become fragmented, corrupted, and irreparable. Consequently, files that may have been recoverable are now hopelessly scrambled. If those files are crucial operating system files, the PC can be damaged beyond repair, with the only repair option left being a complete reinstallation of Windows.

If you’re running Windows 95 or 98, an older version of CHKDSK called Scandisk will search the hard drive but then ASK if you want to repair the errors. As it is the repair process that can corrupt data on damaged hard drives, simply selecting “no” will avoid any problems. In Windows 2000/XP/Vista, however, CHKDSK will automatically try to repair any errors found without asking you first. To abort CHKDSK, simply press the ESC key within 10 seconds after it starts running. From there, your PC will continue to boot into Windows. This is your chance to backup your important files to a CD or a USB Pen Drive.

I am sure we have all been overwhelmed with the PC-Mac wars, but what is all the fuss about? Let me tell you, I have been an avid PC user for the past 10 years or so, and have even started to make a little money on the side using all the knowledge I have retained from all those Microsoft classes. Computer repair is something that I enjoy, and something that I will continue to enjoy, but the thought of me giving the Mac a whirl never dawned on me.

In the end I found myself sitting in my room with a Mac book that I have never used before or knew very little about. Boy was I in for a surprise.

Up until then, I had always used Microsoft. To this day I don’t find anything wrong with Microsoft, it’s just that I am wondering why I waited so long to experience something new. I think this is society’s problem. We are all too worried about change. If you know something, why learn something else? That is the methodology that many American’s live by, but every American should know that the incentives could potentially outweigh living as a person refusing change. The truth of the matter is that a Macintosh is very simple to use (very user friendly), easy to learn, and in my opinion runs much smoother than previous Microsoft platforms. The Mac runs on the Leopard Operating System, and does not demand the resources that Microsoft’s Vista requires (if you own a Mac you probably have no more than 2 GB’s of RAM and are happy with it). I remember asking the clerk why the Mac book only came with 2 GB of RAM. Now I know why. This type of computer does not run inane services in the background thus giving the user a clean and smooth experience. The applications are a whole other story that I will save for another time. To be short, applications will give you the ability to turn your Mac into a personal assistant. There are so many applications to choose from, they helped make life a lot simpler.

The overall feel of a Mac is something that I would have never imagined. I took pride in being pro Microsoft/anti Apple in the past, but now I feel as though I am one in a thousand that will actually take the plunge. Do yourself a favor and experience something new. I am not endorsing Apple in any way shape or form; I am simply stating my opinion. I look forward to exploring deeper into the Mac realm, so that I will someday be able to understand the operating system the way I understand Microsoft’s. So far so good for Mac; two thumbs up!
