Ok so AMD's financial news from last week had some investors and industry analysts a little worried about the viable future of the AMD brand in both the Enterprise, and consumer spaces. There has been a lot of speculation as of late as to whether or not Barcelona will be able to out muscle Intel's Quad-core Xeon 5300 series AKA "Clovertown". AMD answered that question with a resounding YES!! Previous expectations toped out at about 40% faster, but the new figures estimate 50% in Floating point, and 20% for Integer applications. This is based on comparing Barcelona CPUs against the Clovertown CPU at the same clock frequency!! So yes, an AMD Barcelona CPU running at 2.9Ghz will be about 20% - 50% faster then an identically clocked Intel Clovertown CPU.

Only time and the physical launch of the new processor will determine the actual performance numbers. So below are some illustrations detailing the Barcelona, and what AMD has in the pipe for the next 12 to 18 months.

AMD Barcelona overviewA quick overview of the Barcelona layout. Barcelona in detail More thorough look at the Barcelona core.

Barcelona Cache structure A look at how the Cache structure works for the Barcelona core. AMD's Opteron and server chipset Roadmap. Simplified view of the Opteron / Chipset road map.

The future does look pretty promising for AMD, and I am greatly anticipating the new Opterons. I can't say I will be buying one in the near future as my current Opteron 175 still performs beautifully. I do wish I had the money laying around to buy AMD stocks right now. With them at such an attractive price point $14.54 as of the time of writing this article.
